Bandhani in Wadhwan, Tangaliya in Sayla and Bajana, ceramics in Thangadh — the district's crafts are living, not museum pieces. Here's how to see them made, respectfully and by arrangement.
1 · Wadhwan bandhani
The dotted silk of the old capital
Wadhwan's bandhani is the district's most famous craft: fabric knotted with fingernail and thread, dipped in dye, and unknotted to reveal a field of tiny dots. The bandhani lanes of the old town are where the work happens — morning is when the dipping happens, and workshops welcome a polite, arranged visit.
Buy direct from the makers; the price is fair and the piece is real. A sari or dupatta here is a better souvenir than anything in a mall.
2 · Tangaliya in Sayla & Bajana
A GI-tagged weave with few looms left
Tangaliya is a dotted, geometric weave made by wrapping extra thread around the warp — a craft with a GI tag and a shrinking number of looms. The main clusters are at Sayla and Bajana (both within easy reach of the Rann road). A visit is a conversation as much as a tour: ask about the patterns, the family history, and the future of the craft.
