January
Uttarayan — the kite festival
January 14–15 is Gujarat's biggest public holiday of the year. Rooftops across Surendranagar and Wadhwan turn into kite stations; the sky fills with colour and the constant crackle of string. It's free, family-friendly and photogenic — the easiest festival on this page to simply walk into.
Tip: stay till dusk for the lantern-lit sky, and book your room a week ahead — it's a long weekend everywhere.
October–November
Diwali & the festival of lights
Diwali here is lamps, rangoli and sweets — mohanthal and sukhdi from every halwai. The old lanes of Wadhwan and the city's market streets are at their prettiest. It's a family festival; visitors are welcome at the markets and the temple courtyards, especially the evening aarti at the city's Swaminarayan mandirs.
Tip: combine with the 2-day city plan and you'll see the town at its brightest.
