What Tarnetar actually is
Held at the Trinetreshwar (three-eyed lord) temple grounds, the fair runs three days in Bhadarva Sud 4–6 — usually August–September, right after the monsoon. It is Gujarat's liveliest annual expression of the Rabari and Bharwad communities: men in spotless white with embroidered kurtas, women in heavy silver and tie-dye, and everywhere the emblem of the fair — the hand-embroidered chhatri (umbrella).
The same umbrella carries the fair's famous story: in the Swayamvar tradition, a young man would raise an embroidered umbrella as a calling card — his skill, his family's standing and his intent stitched into the canopy. Today the umbrella is costume, craft and heritage first; treat the tradition as culture to appreciate and photograph politely, never as a spectacle of trade in people.

How to be a good guest at Tarnetar
- Ask before portraits. These are families at a festival, not actors. A smile and a request go a long way; a "no" is a "no".
- No flash in the temple or during religious rituals — follow local queues like everyone else.
- Don't frame the fair as a "tribal marriage market" — in any language, aloud or in captions. It is heritage, craft and community celebration.
- Pack your waste out or use the bins; the grounds are a working shrine the rest of the year.
- Stay hydrated — late August is humid and crowded; carry water and sun protection.
- Buy the craft, not the knock-off. Embroidered umbrellas and textiles sold directly by makers are the point.
