Why Chotila draws lakhs

Chotila is the best-known name in this district: Chamunda Mataji's temple sits on a lone, flat-topped hill about 1,170–1,250 ft above the plains. The climb is steps, not road — around 620–700 of them, well-maintained, with benches and tea stalls on the way up. On an ordinary winter morning you'll share the hill with a few hundred pilgrims; during Navratri the numbers jump to lakhs over the festival.

The darshan itself is quick — the shrine is compact. Most of your time goes on the climb, the view, and the foothill bazaar of prasad, chuda and fresh-stuffed dabeli.

Crowd advice

When to go, when to stay away

  • Winter weekdays: calm, clear, beautiful — best first visit.
  • Navratri (both Navratris): lakhs of pilgrims; queues can take hours; the foothill is a fair. Go for the atmosphere, not a quick darshan.
  • Full-moon and Saturdays: noticeably busier; arrive before 7 am.
  • Monsoon: green, fewer crowds, but steps can be slippery — wear grippy soles.
Doli & accessibility Doli rates are set at the foot and vary with season. Negotiate clearly before boarding, and confirm whether the fare covers the full ascent or only part of it.

FAQ

Chotila questions

Is there a way up besides the steps?

Doli (palanquin) carriers operate at the foot for those who cannot climb. A funicular has been under construction for years; treat it as unavailable until you confirm on the ground.

What should I carry?

Water, a cap, a small towel, and modest clothes. Leave heavy bags at the shoe counter. Carry cash — stalls are cash-first.

Can I see the aarti?

Yes; morning and evening aarti are announced at the shrine. Arrive 30+ minutes early on festival days; the queue is managed with token counters.
