Packing & safety for Surendranagar
Sun, dust, temple dress codes, a steep climb and a salt desert — the district is kind if you pack for it. Here's the honest list.
The list
What to pack
- Water bottle — refill everywhere; the sun is the real enemy.
- Cap, sunglasses, sunscreen — non-negotiable, even in winter.
- Modest clothes — shoulders and knees covered for temples (Chotila, Trimandir are strict).
- Comfortable shoes — 620–700 steps at Chotila, uneven stepwells, Rann dust.
- A scarf or wrap — sun, dust and temple cover-up in one.
- Small torch — for Bhimora caves and dusk walks.
- Cash — many stalls, doli carriers and small hotels are cash-first.
- Binoculars — for the Rann and Dholidhaja Dam.
Rules & respect
Safety and etiquette
At the temples
Dress modestly, remove shoes at the counters, follow queues, and don't photograph the sanctum. Chotila's climb: doli for those who can't manage, and skip it entirely in peak summer heat if you're at risk.
On the Rann
Permit + registered jeep only. Stay on marked tracks — off-roading scars the grassland. Keep noise low, never chase herds, and carry water for the long, open drives.
Monsoon
Green and quiet, but the Rann can flood and tracks can shut. Check forest-department notices before a monsoon safari, and carry repellent for mosquitoes.
Summer
45°C+ afternoons are real. Climb Chotila at first light, do the Rann as a dawn-only safari, and spend midday indoors with electrolytes.
